teamwork

The members of a team are not just a group of people who are organized to do something. To be considered a proper team, the members of the group carry the attitude that their teammates' problems are as important as their own. The result is that each member personally possesses the sum of the skills and experiences of everyone on the team.

Most considerations of organizational operations and behaviours resolve to the tension between the behavioural dimensions of control and autonomy. This is not just about how the big stuff transpires, such as signing authority and making big decisions that others must follow. It also inhabits the small corners, such as where online systems demand certain information and confirmations for work to progress, and who speaks at meetings. Leaders truly need to know that certain things, technical things, are transpiring as expected among their followers; but micromanagement is a deep pitfall. Balance is the key.

Well, there's a third behavioural dimension that needs to be balanced-in: namely, teamwork. Putting intentions and collegial support in the brains of intelligent and cooperative workers, giving them the power to be teammates, solves all kinds of problems that no amount of ordering-around or independence can mitigate. Watch the gang behind the counter at a busy fast-food restaurant for a while to help understand this. You need to keep track of individuals to see it. Team sports are even better if you understand the games. Administration and big and small business endeavours are equally susceptible to the advantages of mindfully-implemented teamwork, which pretty much explains many under-performing organizations I've experienced.

So there are three dimensions to balance, in a triangular arrangement, one dimension at each vertex. It was my unrepentant, unmitigated approach to making myself a teammate of everyone I worked with at SSC that made the difference for me and my colleagues. I started this approach in my previous work with Telus Health, it being my first long-term job I held after I acquired my MA in Communication.
